Remembering The King of Pop!

Wow! It always amazes my how quickly time goes by! Today June 25, 2010 marks exactly one tear since the man hailed as The King of Pop, Michael Jackson died! It seems as if it was just yesterday I heard the shocking news and still in disbelief I hesitantly posted my post "Michael Jackson Dead!!!" Yes, it was one year ago the world received the shocking news that an icon in the world of music, the man whose music has thrilled so many generations both young and old dies under questionable circumstances.

June 25, 2009, will always be remembered as the day music suffered one of its greatest loss, that of the innovative and creative Micheal Jackson. The shock of his deal was compounded by the fact that Michael was in  preparing to host a massive tour, "This is It", which was hailed to be his major comeback from his hiatus from the music scene. No doubt his fans suffered from a pungent mixture of shock, disappointment, anger and the very evident outpouring of grief.

Michael Jackson did have his low points, which as with any mega superstar, was dished out by the media in an abundance. Michael was rocked with scandals after scandals, law suites, the scourge of the media, outrage from some of his fans, financial difficulties and was often the subject of many jokes. Nevertheless, Michael Jackson will be remembered as one of, if not, the greatest performer and singer that has walked the face of the earth and will always be the King of Pop!

In honour of this awesome artiste, here is a tribute, which ironically was done by the man himself

Here are a few of his hits from back in the days for your viewing and listening pleasure

Not Good Enough...

I guess that's what the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) thought about the photos I entered into this year JCDC Festival Photography Competition. I submitted two framed photographs (see the photos below) for the competition a few months ago with the hopes that they would get some form of medal in this year competition or at least a certificate of participation. However, this was not meant to be as I received a call tis morning from the JCDC office that my images were not selected for the competition and that I should come and collect them as soon as possible.

I must admit, the news was disappointing... even though I knew there was the possibility that they wouldn't have medaled in this year's competition. I did get quite a few compliments and nods of approval for the images that I submitted from fellow photographers, friends and even the framer... but it seems they still did not match up to the standards of the JCDC judges. I spoke to another fellow photographer though, who has entered on previous occasions, who gave me a disappointing review of the images I submitted. However, I didn't get in contact with him until after I had already submitted the images. Nevertheless, I guess that kind of prepared me for the disappointing news and I did appreciate his honesty and thoughts.

So tomorrow, I plan to head down to the JCDC to tell them a piece of my mind!... LMAO, nah, I'm just kidding! I plan to go down to the JCDC office tomorrow to collect my two framed photos and count my losses. I think my pocket feels more hurt than my pride, as it did cost me a decent amount to get the photo printed and framed in order to enter this competition. I will be putting up this images for sale or auction... whichever, will help to recover the cost of this futile investment. I will divulge more information on the sale shortly in another post. Well, one good thing came out of this though, I finally entered the competition! This was my first year entering, and will be my only considering the costs involved, as I have always wanted to enter this competition for some time now. Nevertheless, this serves as more motivation to be more creative in my photography to ensure my images impresses the eye, stirs the emotions and have that "wow" factor.

Jamaica Pegasus Tweetup

The Jamaica Pegasus Tweetup Banner

Twitter has become a very powerful and influential social media tool in today's technological world which fosters not only the exchange of ideas, views and ideals, but also a very strong promotional and advertising tool. There is no doubt that one of Kingston's leading hotels, The Jamaica Pegasus (twitter: http://twitter.com/JamaicaPegasus), has grasped the power of Twitter to increase their market share and to become more connected to their Jamaican customers. The Jamaica Pegasus has made a bold step and has made a land mark move in hosting the first ever commercially hosted Tweetup!

Tweeters mingling at the tweetup

Originally the tweetup was scheduled for May 27. 2010, however due to the recent social unrest and state of emergency that engulfed the city of Kingston and St. Andrew the first ever tweetup had to be postponed. However, not to be deterred, and not to disappoint the many eager fans, the Jamaica Pegasus team rescheduled to June 18, 2010. Despite the inevitable postponement of the tweetup, Jamaica Pegasus twitter followers were unwavering in their support for this first ever social media event of its kind in Jamaica and turned out in their numbers on the 17 floor of the Jamaica Pegasus. The event stared at 6:00 pm, but I arrived fashionably late at 7:00pm, at which time there was a decent crowd of tweeters and the meeting and greeting was already in full swing. But was this all that the Jamaica Pegasus had planned for this first ever tweetup?

Tanto Blacks performing

The Jamaica Pegasus had much more than just a bunch of tweeters meeting up to introduce themselves and to engage in endless conversations. They did an excellent job at hosting this first ever local tweetup as they provided an open bar and a buffet of delicious finger foods to keep their guests energized and in good spirits! But they did not end there! They spared no expense to keep their guests happy as they ensure the music was good by employing the services of The Captain Collin Hinds, surprised everyone with a guest performer, mister "twitter" himself Tanto Blacks and a fabulous gate prize of a trip to London via British Airways!

The Jamaica Pegasus tweetup was a success and everyone, based on their tweets, had a great time. I got to linkup with familiar tweeters that I follow like Jamaipanese, Iriediva, Iamsbee and Gordonswaby and to meet several other tweeters that I was not famiiar with. Hopefully their will be more Jamaica Pegasus tweetups in the future and that other companies will catch on and begin to host their own tweetups.

For more coverage of the Jamaica Pegasus Tweetup visit the following friends: Jamaipanese, Irie Diva, Corve DaCosta and Gordon Swaby.

It's Going to Be a rough Season!

June 01, is marked as the official beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season which runs from June 01 to November 30 every year. Last year was a quite uneventful year in the Caribbean basin, but according to the weather forecasters 2010 will be the very opposite! The 2010 Hurricane season is predicted to be an extremely active season, not good news for us in the Caribbean especially Jamaican and Haiti which lies in the direct path of most Atlantic Hurricanes!

The weather forecasters have predicted that there will be 13 names storms, including 7 hurricanes, 3 of which will become hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). They seem to be on the right track so far as the first named storm for the North Pacific 2010 season Agatha, already created havoc in Guatemala  just a few days ago. Judging from that it  seems we in the Atlantic region will be in for a rough ride this year. This will no doubt have devastation effects on the already weakened economy of Jamaica if a hurricane should hit the island. However, the ones who will suffer the most from an active season and from a direct hit will be the disaster torn Haiti, as that would only mean more destruction and massive loss of lives.

Hopefully we will be spared the full brunt of a hurricane this season and get only the well needed rains associated with the excess moisture in the region. This wishful thinking, however, is negated by the ever increasing accuracy of hurricane predictions to date. The names of the hurricanes for the Atlantic Hurricane season are as follows:

  • Agatha
  • Blas
  • Celia
  • Darby
  • Estelle
  • Frank
  • Georgette
  • Howard
  • Isis
  • Javier
  • Kay
  • Lester
  • Madeline
  • Newton
  • Orlene
  • Paine
  • Roslyn
  • Seymour
  • Tina
  • Virgil
  • Winifred
  • Xavier
  • Yolanda
  • Zeke

So prepare yourself for a bumpy ride, familiarize yourself with hurricane preparedness steps and start budgeting for the eventualities. Here are some hurricane tips from the NOAA if you need to start getting yourself prepared: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/HAW2/english/disaster_prevention.shtml. Stay safe through this active season my tropical dwelling neighbours.
